How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

Many of us have been conditioned to think that comfort foods are not good and are to be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be really nourishing and good for you. There are a number of foods that, when you eat them, can boost your mood. If you feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly terrific at fighting back depression. Just make sure that you don’t toss out the egg yolk. When you wish to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you elevate your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–run better. Consume an egg and be happy!

Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all great for helping to boost your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more of it you have, the happier you are going to feel. Not only that but nuts, in particular, are a terrific protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent if you wish to feel better. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all loaded with omega-3 and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.

Some grains are actually great for repelling bad moods. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all great for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They help you feel full also which can truly help to better your mood. Feeling hungry can be awful! These grains can elevate your mood as it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You were sure it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This helps raise your mental sharpness while calming the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you feel better. Now you know that it helps you to elevate your moods as well!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a few of these instead!
