Use Food to Elevate Your Mood

For the most part, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and need to be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. Soemtimes, comfort foods can be very nourishing and good for us to consume. There are several foods that, when you eat them, may improve your mood. If you seem to feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually wonderful at dealing with depression. Just be sure that you do not throw out the yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolks particularly, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you improve your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Consume an egg and cheer up!

Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all helpful for raising your mood. This is possible as these foods are high in magnesium which raises your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that directs your brain how you feel all the time. The higher your levels of serotonin, the better you are going to feel. Nuts, on top of elevating your mood, can be a great source of protein.

If you wish to fight depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3s. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you overcome depression.

Grains can be excellent for overcoming a bad mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all good for helping you feel happier. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to make your mood better. Feeling famished can really make you feel terrible! These grains can elevate your mood as it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You were just waiting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid called L-theanine. Studies prove that this specific amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You already knew that green tea helps you be better. Now you are aware that it helps you to elevate your moods too!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try these tips instead!
