Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood

Many of us believe that comfort foods are bad for us and that we need to keep away from them. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Soemtimes, comfort foods can be perfectly healthy and good for us to eat. There are some foods that actually can boost your moods when you eat them. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional boost, test out some of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are great for helping you fight depression. Just make sure that you don’t toss out the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk in particular, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you raise your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Eat an egg and be happy!

Make a trail mixout of a variety of seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all terrific for helping to elevate your mood. This is because these foods are rich in magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin levels. Serotonin is called the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more of this chemical in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Nuts, along with improving your mood, can be a superb source of protein.

Cold water fish are great if you want to feel better. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.

Some grains are really great for repelling bad moods. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all good for helping you be in a happier state of mind. These foods can help you feel full for longer too, helping you feel better. Feeling famished can be a real downer! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are not difficult to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your blood glucose which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is truly great for your mood. You were simply waiting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while also calming the rest of your body. You probably already knew how easy it is to become healthy when you drink green tea. Now you are aware that it helps you to raise your moods also!

You can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are bad for you to feel better! Try several of these instead!
