How to Improve Your Mood with Food

A lot of us believe that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we ought to avoid them. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that, when you eat them, can boost your mood. If you feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really wonderful at fighting back depression. You need to make sure, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. Every time you would like to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, the yolks in particular, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can be great for lifting up your mood. This is because they increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Consume an egg and feel a lot better!

Make a trail mixfrom different seeds and nuts. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more you have of it, the better you will feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a great protein food source.

If you wish to defeat depression, try eating some cold water fish. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fats. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you overcome depression.

It’s not hard to drive away your bad mood when you consume grains. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are fantastic at helping you be happier. These foods can help you feel full for longer as well, which can help your mood too. Feeling hungry can truly bring you down! These grains can help your mood elevate since it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your blood sugar which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is actually great for your mood. You were just expecting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is loaded with a certain amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid actually induces brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while simultaneously making the rest of your body more relaxed. You already knew green tea could help you become better. Now you know green tea can help raise your mood also!

As you can see, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try some of these hints instead.
