How to Boost Your Mood with Food

Most of us believe that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we need to stay away from them. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. Several foods actually do improve your mood when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, try a few of these.

Eggs, you may be astonished to learn, are fantastic at combating depression. Just be sure that you do not throw out the yolk. Whenever you wish to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolks especially, are loaded with B vitamins. These B vitamins are fantastic for helping to boost your mood. This is because these vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Try eating an egg and be happy!

Put together several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be elevated by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and so on. This is because these foods are high in magnesium, which helps to raise your production of serotonin. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more of it you have, the happier you are going to feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a fantastic source of protein.

Cold water fish are great if you are wanting to feel happier. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you overcome depression.

Some grains are actually excellent for repelling bad moods. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all great for helping you feel better. These foods fill you up better and that can help improve your moods also. Feeling hungry can be a real downer! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest. You digest these foods more quickly than other things which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.

Your mood can truly be helped by green tea. You just knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This helps better your mental sharpness while relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you become a lot healthier. Now you are well aware that it helps you to lift your moods also!

As you can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are bad for you just so to feel better! Try several of these instead!
