Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood

A lot of us think that comfort foods are not good for us and that we must keep away from them. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that actually can boost your moods when you consume them. When you feel a little down and need an emotional boost, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really wonderful at dealing with depression. You need to see to it, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. When you wish to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, especially the yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Try to eat an egg and feel happier!

Put together some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be raised by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and so on. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The more of it you have, the happier you are going to feel. Not only that, nuts, in particular, are a fantastic protein source.

Cold water fish are great if you would like to feel better. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously elevate your mood.

Some grains are actually wonderful for fighting off bad moods. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually wonderful for helping increase your happiness levels. They help you feel full as well which can actually help to make your mood better. Feeling hungry can truly bring you down! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is high in a particular amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can actually stimulate brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to be healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that applies to your mood also!

As you can see, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try these tips instead!
